Spiritbeads®…..Stringing Intentions For Your Life

The Full Story

After watching her father bravely fight lymphoma for two years before passing on, Deborah knew that she wanted to use her creativity to help others. “My father was a good artist,” she says, “and my mother was a wonderful nurse. I suddenly realized that I could draw on the best of both.”

Shortly thereafter, Deborah took a beading workshop by Eleanor Wiley, author of A String and a Prayer. “I was hooked on beading after that,” she recalls.

The third in this life-changing series of events was when Deborah was introduced to an organization called Society for Art in Healthcare. She became a member, an office volunteer, and attended a meeting at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Hospital. “I was so impressed by the art programs being brought to the hospital that when I returned home from that meeting, I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” she says. “The very next week, SpiritBeads was born.”

Later, SpiritSeeds was born from the idea of combining SpiritBeads with Deborah’s botanical drawings and love of making decorative papers. SpiritSeeds are botanical compositions in watercolor, colored pencil, and decorated papers, and each one is adorned with hand-sewn seed beads.

“Interior Intentions is the company that encompasses all the work in the variety of wonderful mediums that I have learned throughout my art education,” says Deborah. “From beading and watercolors to drawing and bookmaking, my company enables me to express my own creativity, and also facilitate the creativity of others.”

Over the past few years, we have offered SpiritBeads as one of several expressive arts programs for outpatients, and it is definitely one of the most popular. Deborah herself has a calm and centering approach in working with clients – a wonderful ability to tune in to what their abilities are, and then very patiently able to work with either individuals or a group. - Sabine Gnesdiloff, LCSW, OSW-C, Life with Cancer Program Manager
